Kartiki Gonsalves is an Indian documentary filmmaker and photographer known for directing the documentary film The Elephant Whisperers, which won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Short Film at the 95th Academy Awards. She was born on November 2, 1986, in Ooty, Tamil Nadu, India, to parents Timothy A. Gonsalves and Priscilla Tapley Gonsalves. She grew up in the Nilgiri Biosphere reserve with her younger sister, Danica.
Personal life
Gonsalves completed her education at the Dr G R Damodaran College of Science in Coimbatore, India. She later focused on photography and became a documentary filmmaker and photographer. She has worked as a camera operator for Animal Planet and the Discovery Channel. Gonsalves is an International League of Conservation Photographers Associate Fellow.
Career
Gonsalves is best known for directing the documentary film The Elephant Whisperers, which was produced by Guneet Monga and screened on Netflix. The documentary, which was produced at Theppakadu Elephant Camp, 30-minutes from where Gonsalves grew up, is 41 minutes long. It follows the relationship between elephants and their mahouts, who are also known as elephant whisperers.
On March 13, 2023, The Elephant Whisperers won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Short Film at the 95th Academy Awards. It was the first Indian film to win the award.
